Sonus Paradisi Leens Hinsz Organ VOL 3 (HAUPTWERK)  Overview

The organ in the Petruskerk in Leens was built 1733/34 by the Groningen organ builder Albertus Anthoni Hinsz (1704-1785), replacing an older instrument. The Hinsz organ has 27 stops and three divisions: Hoofdwerk, Rugwerk and Pedaal, and was completed in December 1734. Hinsz borrowed the design of the instrument from the organ of the Michaël church in Zwolle. The Leens organ is distinguished for its brilliant sound, compared to other Hinsz instruments, such as Midwolda or Harlingen. It is therefore closest to the Schnitger tradition in terms of sound. The richly decorated organ case, the carvings, and the sculptures were made by Theodorus van der Haven and Caspar Struiwigh. The organ is unusually large for a small church.

The organ was renovated in 1843/44 by Geert Pieters Dik, then in 1867 it was repaired by Petrus van Oeckelen after the construction of the new tower of the church, and in 1922 it was restored by Jan Doornbos. In each case, one or more stops were replaced. The 1922 restoration also included renewal of the façade pipes and wind supply. The Petruskerk itself was restored in 1948-52. The organ, which had been encased for protection during the church restoration, was made playable again by the organ maker Mense Ruiter. But at that time it became immediately apparent that the precious instrument had suffered to such an extent that a total restoration was necessary. This was carried out in the years 1963-67 by the organ builders Gebr. Van Vulpen in Utrecht. At that time, the original disposition was restored. The restored instrument was inaugurated on April 26, 1968. Over the years there were some corrections to this restoration, such as lowering the wind pressure (which is now 68mm). In 1981, there was a pedal coupler added. In 2010, the temperament was changed to a Neidhardt II (“Dorf”).

In 2019, a major maintenance was entrusted to Orgelmakerij Reil B.V. This included a reconstruction of the entire wind supply with five wedge bellows, as well as retouching other organ parts, including the Calcanten bell. The front pipes of the three Prestanten from 1922 were revoiced to better match the rest of the instrument, and the voicing of the rest of the pipework was corrected where necessary. The composition of the Scherp from 1968 was revised. However, the Neidhardt II tuning was maintained and the wind pressure remained almost the same. While the wind chests and pipework were in the workshop in Heerde in 2020, the carvings were restored and completed by Tico Top. Members of the Foundation Hinszorgel Leens then waxed the organ case and accessories, including the organ balustrade. In early May 2021, the restored organ was festively inaugurated.

Sonus Paradisi has recorded the organ twice: In the year 2017, before the Reil restoration, and in 2022 after the restoration. The mic positions and recording technique were the same for the main channels, and therefore it is possible to directly compare the sound before and after the restoration using a special ODF supplied with the sample set. This ODF gives the user the ability to switch back and forth between the two sounds of the instrument in real time. This capability shows the unique potential of the sampling technique for organ research and historiography; such a direct comparison is impossible otherwise, especially not in the real world with the real pipes.

Each of these 4 bar loops include eighth & sixteenth note variations, accented and unaccented.

These loops were recorded using all analog gear. We utilized a stereo pair of Lucas CS-1’s through the UTA UnFairchild.

Going along with the Dead theme, these loops are ultra processable and can be mangled and manipulated to your hearts content.

Description : The instrument is the largest surviving organ of Carl August Buchholz (1796 – 1884), a prolific Berlin organ builder. It consists of four manual consoles with 63 registers. The Black Church (Biserica neagra, Schwarze Kirche) is a Lutheran church in the heart of Transylvania (today Romania). Transylvania had German colonists since the 12th century, and there has been an uninterrupted German Lutheran tradition since the beginning of Lutheranism in Europe. Brasov is the center of this church organ. The church is famous for its unique collection of historical Turkish carpets, which hang all over the walls and throughout – and they also undoubtedly contribute to the acoustics of the Gothic building. The organ is the largest mechanical instrument in Romania. The importance of the instrument is emphasized by frequent concerts: from spring to autumn, three organ concerts are held every week.

The type of instrument is sometimes called “between times”. It has clear signs of a romantic sound: the dominance of 8-foot stops, the polychoric design of the divisions, fully developed choirs (flutes, strings, principals, reeds) in each division, strong dynamic contrasts between the divisions. However, it still has its roots in the design of the Baroque organ with its “Werkprinzip” and pyramidal structure (main stops, aliquots, mixtures). The core of this organ is the Joachim Wagner organ from the Marienkirche in Berlin, an organ that Buchholz renovated in 1829. The purely mechanical action drives traditional slide chests, requiring a lot of force to play on the keyboard.

The organ is physically designed on three floors: the base is occupied by the pedal with the highest pipes on the sides of the organ body. The Oberwerk is located on the floor above at the front, which results in a direct and real sound. The Unterwerk is at the back, closed and has the characteristics of a real echo compartment. The upper floor belongs to the Hauptmanual (at the front) and the Rohrwerk (at the back, closed), which allows you to hear a somewhat distant, almost mystical sound from above. The colors of the registers match each other perfectly, creating a truly smooth crescendo, where no register (even the loudest) stands out from the dark and heavy tutti.

The organ was built in 1839 in the early romantic style. It has survived without major changes to this day.

Sonus Paradisi Velesovo Organ, (Surround) (HAUPTWERK) Overview

The instrument was newly built in 2007 for the church of our Lady in Adergas (Velesovo, Slovenia). The place belongs to the important pilgrim churches of the area. Former monastery was transformed into a spiritual centre, where groups or individuals may find refuge and spend days in silence and meditation, and enjoy the surrounding beauty of nature and giant mountains.

The organbuilder Tomaš Močnik lives in the town Cerklje nearby, and hence his Opus 14 in the Velesovo church is a kind of his “showroom” instrument. It was built in a very traditional manner, inspired by the Thuringian baroque organs, particularly by the work of Zacharias Hildebrandt. The Hauptwerk is situated in the centre of the main case, the Oberwerk occupies its upper part. The pedal pipes are located behind the windchest of the Hautpwerk. The tracker is purely mechanical, perfectly going, allowing good touch control.
